Gary Kelley, author School Visits
After 34 years teaching grades 4-6 in the Beaverton school district I retired to continue my writing career. Now that my first book, The Youngest Mountain Man, is a reality I’d like to visit your school and help your Oregon Trail Days, or Fur Trade Unit become an enduring memory for your students.
The Youngest Mountain Man is a boys’
historical fiction adventure story which augments the fourth grade westward
expansion curriculum. Jacob Thompson, 13, is rescued by two mountain men
when his family is attacked on the Oregon Trail. They teach him to survive
and learn mountain man skills as they trap their way to the rendezvous, and
and attempt to rescue his little sister, taken by the Indians. It’s a
“growing up in the wilderness” story.
I normally charge $150.00 for a whole-grade-level presentation. However,
with finances the way they are, I’d be honored to visit your school at no
charge, IF I could donate my book to the fourth grade teachers, and if
students could read/listen to it before my visit. I’d deliver pre-order
envelopes a few weeks before the visit so parents could request autographs
and enclose their checks. I’d deliver the books the day of my visit. Book
sales help offset my expenses, but a donation for gas money would be appreciated! A Skype visit with your students may be possible as well. I’d like to try that with classes that have read my book.
I encourage you to check my website
www.garykelleywriter.com or visit my
blog @ http://www.garykelleyoutdoorwriter.blogspot.com/ for more
information. You can review the book on www.Amazon.com where you see sample
pages. Students are invited to look for me on Facebook.
I offer three different presentations, depending on your needs. Most of my
visits are to fourth grades because the fur trade, and the Oregon Trail, are
part of that curriculum. I also do Author’s presentations centered on the
writing of the book, as well as a presentation on the craft of
writing/publishing, which is more suitable for fifth and sixth graders.
Note-publishing is undergoing drastic changes, like POD (computer generated
Publish On Demand) and e-books like Kindle. Self publishing, even for
students, is becoming a reality.
If I can help you with a memorable author’s visit, please email me at
garykelley@theblademaker.com to discuss a date. Most schools have their
“Oregon Trail Day” in May and June so if you are interested contact me
before those dates fill up. |
